VW ID. UNYX 09 pre-sale opens as ID. UNYX 08 registrations fall 60% in August

Volkswagen (ETR: VOW3) joint venture VW Anhui opened pre-sales for the ID. UNYX 09 electric sedan on September 24, 2026, with prices ranging from 199,900 to 249,900 CNY (c. $29,800 to $37,200). The sedan is the second car VW Anhui has co-developed with XPeng (NYSE: XPEV). The first, the ID. UNYX 08 SUV, registered just 183 units in August, down 60% from July, and has since had its entry price cut by 40,000 CNY (c. $6,000).

VW Anhui's three models on sale registered 1,699 units in August, down 12% from 1,927 in July. The ID. UNYX 06 SUV rose to 818 units from 563, while the ID. UNYX 07 sedan slipped to 698 units from 912. The company's reported August deliveries of 1,302 units, up 26% year over year, match its wholesale shipments to dealers, which fell 39% from 2,149 in July. Temporary shortages of key chip components delayed deliveries of some ID. UNYX 06 and ID. UNYX 07 vehicles, with production expected to recover gradually by late September.

The ID. UNYX 08, the first product of Volkswagen's partnership with XPeng, went on sale on April 16, 2026 at 229,900 CNY (c. $34,300). In August, VW Anhui shipped 379 units of the SUV to dealers, more than double the 183 that were registered, after registrations of 452 in July. A limited-time offer on May 29 took 20,000 CNY off the launch price, and a September 12 refresh lowered the entry price to 189,900 CNY (c. $28,300) through October 7.

The ID. UNYX 09 slots directly against that discounted SUV. The single-motor sedan starts 10,000 CNY above the ID. UNYX 08's current entry price, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version at 249,900 CNY matches the top of the refreshed SUV lineup. Pre-sale customers who place a 1,000 CNY deposit receive a 3,000 CNY discount and a 1,000 CNY gift package, and the official market launch is set for October 2026.

The widest gap between the sedan and its XPeng relatives is computing power. The ID. UNYX 09 carries a single XPeng Turing AI chip rated at 750 TOPS, half of the 1,500 TOPS the ID. UNYX 08 gets from two Turing chips and one-third of the 2,250 TOPS XPeng fits to its own P7 sedan with three. The sensor suite totals 26 units: 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors, plus an in-cabin driver-monitoring camera.

Despite the single chip, VW Anhui lists highway and urban navigation-assisted driving (NOA) along with parking-space-to-parking-space assisted driving. The system runs XPeng's second-generation end-to-end VLA model using a vision-only approach, and the cockpit is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P. An 85-inch augmented-reality head-up display is also part of the package.

Every version uses a 91.963 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL (SZSE: 300750). CLTC range is 755 km (469 miles) for the single-motor car and 705 km (438 miles) for the all-wheel-drive version, or 612 km (380 miles) and 571 km (355 miles) on the WLTP cycle. An 800V architecture supports 5C charging, rated to add 500 km (311 miles) in 10 minutes, with a 10% to 80% charge taking under 12 minutes.

Those figures land close to XPeng's own P7, which launched on August 27, 2025 at 219,800 to 301,800 CNY (c. $32,700 to $45,000) with a 92.2 kWh battery, up to 820 km (510 miles) of CLTC range and a claimed 525 km (326 miles) added in 10 minutes of charging. The ID. UNYX 09 is reportedly built on P7 vehicle technology rather than Volkswagen's own CEA electronic architecture, and it will be sold in China only.

The single-motor version uses a 230 kW (308 hp) rear motor, while the all-wheel-drive version adds a 140 kW (188 hp) front motor for 370 kW combined. The fastback measures 5,081 mm long, 1,980 mm wide and 1,509 mm tall on a 3,030 mm wheelbase. Standard equipment includes 21-inch wheels, Brembo brake calipers, frameless doors and 422 individually controllable LED units across the front and rear lights, and the headlights can project video from the central screen onto a surface ahead of the car.

Inside, a horizontal dashboard layout frames a large floating central touchscreen with a built-in AI assistant, alongside one-piece sport seats and a steering wheel with an illuminated VW logo. The center console groups wireless charging, cupholders and storage. Buyers can choose from four exterior colors and three interior schemes, one of which, a purple cabin trim, is exclusive to the ID. UNYX 09.

Robert Cisek, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand China, said in July that the ID. UNYX 09 was the second model Volkswagen and XPeng had jointly developed within 24 months, following a $700 million investment in XPeng in July 2023. The stakes extend well beyond Hefei. Volkswagen's China deliveries fell 8% in 2025 to 2.69 million vehicles, and the group plans to launch 13 new energy models in China in 2026, rising to more than 30 by 2029.

Distribution is also changing. VW Anhui runs about 140 outlets of its own and aims for 200 by year-end. Since April 2026, it has also sold cars through store-in-store counters at FAW-Volkswagen dealers, starting in about 30 cities where its own coverage is thin. It is the first time Volkswagen's Chinese joint ventures have shared a retail channel, giving the ID. UNYX 09 access to a network of nearly 1,000 dealers.

The Hefei plant built its 100,000th vehicle, an ID. UNYX 08, on August 18, 2026, about two and a half years after mass production began in February 2024. With the ID. UNYX 09 priced within 10,000 CNY of a discounted SUV that registered 183 units in August, October's launch will test whether a cheaper, lower-compute XPeng-derived sedan can lift VW Anhui's monthly volume.
