SAIC VW ID. ERA 8X undercuts Li L6 from 206,800 CNY

SAIC Volkswagen put the ID. ERA 8X on sale in Chengdu on October 12, 2026, pricing the five-seat extended-range SUV from a limited-time 206,800 CNY (c. $30,700). That opener sits well below the 249,800 CNY (c. $37,100) national retail price of Li Auto's (NASDAQ: LI) latest L6 and under the 239,800 CNY (c. $35,600) starting MSRP of AITO's M6 EREV Max, the entry range-extender trim, two of the models launch coverage casts as the 8X's direct rivals.

The SUV arrives in four trims. Official guide prices run from 226,800 CNY to 289,800 CNY (c. $33,700 to $43,100). Limited-time launch pricing is 206,800 CNY for the Pro, 229,800 CNY for the Max, 249,800 CNY for the Max Long Range and 269,800 CNY for the Ultra Long Range. The six-seat ID. ERA 9X, which went on sale on April 25, 2026, still starts at a limited-time 299,800 CNY (c. $44,500), so the 8X undercuts its own family flagship by 93,000 CNY at the entry point.

The 8X measures 5,020 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,750 mm tall, on a 2,970 mm wheelbase. It is a dedicated five-seater, about 187 mm shorter than the 9X with a wheelbase 100 mm shorter. SAIC Volkswagen is pitching it as the more urban sibling in the ID. ERA lineup, which already includes the 9X EREV and the ID. ERA 5S plug-in hybrid sedan that went on sale in August 2026.

Power comes from a range-extender pack built around the EA211 1.5-liter turbo, with a maximum generator output of 105 kW. The architecture is 800-volt across the range, and the extender is specified to run on 92-octane gasoline with a WLTC charge-sustaining fuel use of 5.85 L/100 km. The Pro uses a single motor rated at up to 220 kW and a 51.1 kWh battery for a CLTC electric range of 373 km (232 miles) and a combined range of 1,567 km (974 miles). The Max adds dual motors and all-wheel drive on the same pack, with a CLTC electric range of 340 km (211 miles). The two long-range trims switch to a 65.2 kWh CATL pack, rated at 451 km (280 miles) of CLTC electric range and up to 1,602 km (995 miles) combined. All-wheel-drive versions claim 660 Nm of peak torque and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 4.6 seconds. Fast charging is quoted at 16 minutes for a 10% to 80% top-up on the 800-volt system.

Every trim ships with Momenta's (HKEX: 6880) R7 world-model driver-assistance stack as standard, paired with a forward 192-channel lidar and 26 sensors. SAIC Volkswagen says the system supports highway and urban navigation on autopilot plus parking-space-to-parking-space assistance, including automatic gate passage. That standard fit is the clear hardware pitch against rivals that often reserve lidar and higher-tier assistance for upper trims or paid software packs.

The cabin runs Volkswagen OS on a Snapdragon 8295P chip, with dual 15.6-inch 2.5K displays, a windshield HUD and Smart Surface panels in the doors. Chassis hardware includes double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension as standard; Max and above can take a closed dual-chamber air suspension with a 150 mm travel range and a predictive road-preview system that scans about 15 meters ahead. A 12-liter dual-opening fridge is listed as standard across the range, along with nine airbags and dual-layer acoustic glass on key openings.

The price cut lands the 8X squarely in China's busiest midsize EREV SUV band. Li Auto's new-generation L6, launched in July 2026, sells at a single national retail price of 249,800 CNY, with extras such as zero-gravity front seats sold as options. AITO's official configuration table puts the range-extender M6 from 239,800 CNY for the Max, rising to 279,800 CNY for the Ultra, with battery-electric M6 variants from 229,800 CNY. Before the 8X's October 12 reveal, pre-sale chatter had generally put the model between about 250,000 CNY and 350,000 CNY. The limited opener clears that band by a wide margin and puts a joint-venture badge into a price fight long owned by Chinese startups and Huawei-backed brands.

Demand in the segment is still climbing. Li L6 retail volume reached 10,666 units in September 2026, up from 9,918 in August. AITO M6 retail rose to 8,651 from 7,907 over the same span. SAIC Volkswagen's own six-seat sibling is moving more slowly: ID. ERA 9X retail slipped to 910 in September from 1,109 in August. September terminal registrations were not yet posted for any of those three models.

Launch incentives stack on top of the limited price. For a limited window, SAIC Volkswagen is offering a deposit that expands from 888 CNY to 5,888 CNY against the final payment, a 10,000 CNY trade-in credit, a 5,000 CNY insurance subsidy and free upgrades valued at up to 20,000 CNY, including Nappa leather on the Pro and an air-suspension package on Max and Max Long Range. Those credits matter for transaction pricing even if the sticker already undercuts the segment leaders.

At the Chengdu event, SAIC Volkswagen also said more than 80% of pre-sale orders were for Max and higher trims, a mix that would pull buyers toward the dual-motor and long-range packs rather than the 206,800 CNY Pro. Whether that split holds once customers face the full option sheet will be one of the first reads on whether the launch price is a traffic builder or the actual transaction center of gravity.

The 8X is the third nameplate in the ID. ERA lineup and the second EREV. SAIC Volkswagen closed the event by dating the family's first battery-electric model, the compact ID. ERA 5X, for November 12, 2026. That SUV, about 4,560 mm long, is the first Volkswagen model built on the China Main Platform and the China Electronic Architecture developed with XPeng (NYSE: XPEV).

The open question is whether a German-joint-venture badge, Momenta R7 as standard and a sub-210,000 CNY opener are enough to take share from Li and AITO in a segment where both rivals already sell several thousand units a month. November's ID. ERA 5X launch will show how far SAIC Volkswagen intends to push the same playbook into pure electric SUVs.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.7313 CNY as of October 12, 2026.
