The 5X joins a fast-expanding lineup. The range-extended ID. Era 9X, a six-seat flagship SUV with dual-motor all-wheel drive, launched on April 25, 2026 with pricing from 309,800 CNY (c. $46,150), later cut to a limited-time 298,800 CNY (c. $44,510), and has surpassed 10,000 deliveries within its first two months on sale. SAIC Volkswagen groups the 9X together with the ID. Era 8X, the ID. Era 5S and the new 5X as its "ID. Era 985" family.
The mid-to-large ID. Era 8X, an extended-range SUV offered with rear- or all-wheel drive and up to 400 km of CLTC-rated EV-only range from a 65.2 kWh battery, made its public debut alongside the 5X at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21, 2026, the same event where the 5S sedan formally went on sale. The 5X carries added significance for Volkswagen's China strategy: it is Volkswagen's first production vehicle worldwide built on the CMP platform paired with the CEA electronic-electrical architecture. Volkswagen Group has said CMP stands for "China Main Platform," and that CEA, or China Electrical Architecture, was developed jointly by Volkswagen Group China Technology Company and CARIAD China with XPeng (NYSE: XPEV). The automaker has said the platform is intended to cut production costs by 40 percent by 2026 as it targets the compact-EV segment, which it expects to make up more than half of future demand in China.
Exterior design carries over the ID. Era family's styling cues, including a light-up logo integrated into the daytime running lights and matrix LED headlights. The 5X measures 4,560 mm (179.5 in) long, 1,896 mm (74.6 in) wide and 1,630 mm (64.2 in) tall, on a 2,815 mm (110.8 in) wheelbase, with a 16-degree approach angle and 18-degree departure angle. Buyers will be able to specify split-style front headlights, a roof rack, a panoramic glass roof, an ETC toll-payment transponder and multiple tailgate badge styles and wheel designs as options, while the standard exterior mirrors integrate a rear-facing camera as part of the car's base image-sensing hardware.

Driver assistance centers on SAIC Volkswagen's "Xingyun Zhixing" system, which pairs 192-line lidar with a Horizon Journey 6H compute chip and a 4-nanometer MediaTek 8676 cabin processor rated at 420 TOPS of combined processing power. SAIC Volkswagen says the setup enables end-to-end, full-scenario Level 2++ urban navigate-on-autopilot capability, building on the "Yunqi Zhicang" smart cockpit software already used across the ID. Era range. The automaker has described the system as competitive with the industry's leading assisted-driving stacks, though that claim has not been independently benchmarked.

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor built by United Automotive Electronic Systems, rated at 63 kW continuous and 155 kW (208 hp) peak output, with a top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph). The 5X is rear-wheel drive only, with a curb weight of roughly 1,685 kg (3,715 lbs). Its lithium iron phosphate battery pack comes from CATL (SHE: 300750) and was engineered to meet China's newest national battery-safety standard, though SAIC Volkswagen has not released battery capacity or range figures.

Standard safety equipment includes ABS, front and side airbags, a center airbag and a full-length head-curtain airbag system, plus an event data recorder and front and rear millimeter-wave radar and vision cameras that SAIC Volkswagen says lay the hardware groundwork for higher levels of driver assistance later.

SAIC Volkswagen has kept commercial details close for now; a blind order in China typically collects a refundable deposit to gauge demand well before a brand locks in trim pricing. For context, the related ID. Era 5S sedan launched at Chengdu with official pricing spanning 119,900 to 149,900 CNY (c. $17,860 to $22,330), later discounted to as low as 89,900 CNY (c. $13,390) for a limited time. The 5X, as an SUV built on different hardware, is likely to be priced on its own terms once SAIC Volkswagen confirms figures.

The rollout comes as SAIC Volkswagen's traditional business comes under pressure. Volkswagen's China deliveries fell 26 percent year-over-year to about 973,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, and group net profit dropped 35.73 percent to €2.574 billion, with management citing intensifying competition from domestic automakers in the new-energy-vehicle market. SAIC-Volkswagen's overall passenger-vehicle sales were down 42.7 percent year-over-year in August 2026, and the brand did not appear among China's top 10 best-selling NEV brands that month. Volkswagen has said it plans to launch more than 20 NEV models in China during 2026 as it works to lift new-energy vehicles above 10 percent of its China sales.
Whether blind-order demand for the 5X keeps pace with domestic rivals once a price finally lands will be an early signal of how much ground Volkswagen's localized CMP platform strategy has actually recovered.
