NIO Firefly reaches 60,000 deliveries with a single compact EV model

NIO Inc.'s (NYSE: NIO) boutique sub-brand Firefly celebrated its 60,000th vehicle delivery on May 23, 2026, reaching the milestone with a single compact five-door hatchback approximately thirteen months after first deliveries began.

The brand had crossed 50,000 deliveries on March 29, 2026 — roughly eleven months after launch — meaning 10,000 additional vehicles were delivered in less than two months.

Firefly president Daniel Jin has set a monthly run-rate target of 6,000 to 6,500 units from the second quarter onward and is maintaining a goal of 100,000 cumulative global deliveries by the end of 2026.

The result came despite a difficult start to the year. January deliveries fell to 2,807 units and February to 2,657, weighed down by the Chinese New Year holiday and China's halved NEV purchase tax exemption — from CNY 30,000 to CNY 15,000 (c. $2,200) — which had triggered a demand pull-forward into December 2025.

March recovered sharply to 6,119 units — its second-best monthly result since launch, though April gave back some ground at 4,980 deliveries, contributing 16.96% of NIO Inc.'s total 29,356 units that month.

A product refresh launched on April 7, 2026 aimed to sustain momentum. The updated Firefly EV raises peak motor output to 120 kW (161 hp) from the original 105 kW, trimming the 0–100 km/h sprint to 7.9 seconds, and targets a CLTC-rated range exceeding 500 km (311 miles) on the long-range variant.

The standard range model retains a 42.1 kWh Sunwoda LFP battery pack rated at 420 km (261 miles) under the same cycle, with DC fast charging peaking at 100 kW and bringing the pack from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes. The Aster 1.5.0 over-the-air update rolled out on May 14 extended the same 120 kW motor upgrade at no cost to existing owners.

The refreshed model carries pricing of 119,800–125,800 CNY (c. $17,600–$18,500) for a full vehicle purchase, unchanged from its predecessor at the entry level. Under NIO's Battery-as-a-Service plan, the price drops to 79,800–85,800 CNY (c. $11,700–$12,600) with a monthly battery rental fee of 399 CNY (c. $59).

Formally unveiled at NIO Day on December 21, 2024, the Firefly EV is positioned to compete with the Mini and Smart in the premium compact segment. Design is led by NIO Senior Vice President Kris Tomasson, whose signature treatment includes a triple-ring headlight arrangement and a 4.7-metre turning radius described by the brand as the tightest in its class. The model carries five-star ratings in both China NCAP and Euro NCAP.

A notable technical caveat has shaped the brand's near-term trajectory. Firefly vehicles currently cannot access NIO's network of 3,857 battery swap stations, which use an architecture incompatible with the compact car's shorter wheelbase. The Aster 1.5.0 update added a swap station parking assist feature in preparation for NIO's fifth-generation swap stations, with a pilot of five to ten stations planned for May and June 2026 and broader deployment targeted from July.

Beyond China, Firefly is active in more than ten markets including Norway, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Thailand, with the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand confirmed for entry later in 2026. European volumes remain thin — the brand registered just 54 vehicles across nine European markets in February — though NIO has shifted to a pure distributor model overseas to manage costs.

On April 2, 2026, the Firefly EV was named the 2026 World Urban Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show, selected by a panel of 98 automotive journalists — the first World Car Award for either brand. Whether that international recognition can translate into meaningful overseas volumes before the year-end 100,000-unit target comes due will be the defining test of the second half.
