NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO; HKEX: 9866) officially launched its Firefly sub-brand in Thailand on March 5, 2026, making the country the second right-hand drive (RHD) market for the premium compact electric vehicle after Singapore, as the Chinese automaker accelerates a global expansion centred on tariff-free territories.

The Bangkok debut was held in partnership with Thonburi BlueSky Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Thonburi Group — a Thai automotive conglomerate founded in 1941 that serves as the local distributor and contract manufacturer for Mercedes-Benz and has held the Geely distributorship in Thailand since late 2024. The partnership agreement was signed on October 24, 2025, in Shanghai by NIO founder and CEO William Li.

The right-hand drive version of the Firefly hatchback was first shown publicly at Auto Guangzhou in November 2025, with mass production commencing on November 18 of that year. Singapore received the inaugural RHD delivery batch and hosted the car's Southeast Asian reveal at the Singapore Motorshow 2026 in January, with Wearnes Automotive serving as local partner.

Thailand, where Thonburi BlueSky will distribute the model, is the second stop in a sequenced regional rollout that also targets Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Daniel Jin, NIO vice president and president of Firefly, described Thailand as "the most dynamic and strategic market in Southeast Asia" and said the country would be "a driving force in our global growth."

Ratapon Viriyaphant, chairman of the Thonburi Group, said the collaboration would "set new benchmarks for premium EVs" in Thailand over the long term.

Firefly will formally present the RHD model at the 47th Bangkok International Motor Show. Specific Thai pricing and variant details are expected to be announced later in March, the company said at the launch event.

The Firefly is a five-door subcompact hatchback built at NIO Factory Two in Hefei, Anhui province. It measures 4,003 mm in length, 1,781 mm wide, and 1,557 mm tall, with a 2,615 mm wheelbase.

The powertrain pairs a 42.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by Sunwoda with a single 105 kW (141 hp) rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 200 Nm of torque and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). The car reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.2 seconds.

Rated range stands at 330 km (205 miles) on the WLTP cycle, or 420 km (261 miles) under the less demanding Chinese CLTC standard. DC fast charging peaks at 100 kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in approximately 29–31 minutes, while AC charging is supported at up to 11 kW. The car features a flat-floor front bench, a 92-litre frunk, and a rear cargo volume of up to 1,253 litres with seats folded, along with nine airbags and a 4.7-metre turning radius suited to urban use.

In China, the Firefly starts at 119,800 CNY (c. $16,500) and tops out at 125,800 CNY (c. $17,300), with a battery-as-a-service option available from 79,800 CNY (c. $11,000). European pricing begins at approximately €29,900 — roughly double the China price — after the European Commission imposed additional duties on Chinese-made battery electric vehicles in late 2024. Thai pricing, when announced, is expected to reflect the tariff advantage that made Thailand a priority market in the first place.

Firefly has accumulated more than 40,000 global deliveries since its Chinese launch on April 19, 2025, a milestone reached on January 10, 2026. Monthly volumes peaked at 7,084 units in December 2025 before falling to 2,807 in January and 2,657 in February, with the extended nine-day Chinese New Year holiday cited as a factor in the sequential declines.

The brand currently sells across roughly ten countries, including Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Austria, and Portugal in Europe, in addition to Singapore and Macau in Asia.

The Firefly was named a finalist for the 2026 World Urban Car award — alongside the Baojun Yep Plus and the Hyundai Venue — with the winner to be announced April 1 at the New York International Auto Show. Top Gear described the car as a "Chinese supermini you might actually crave," noting its ambition to replicate Mini's boutique positioning for a wider, more price-sensitive global audience.

NIO plans to expand Firefly to more than 40 markets worldwide. The United Kingdom, where RHD prototypes were spotted at engineering facilities last year, is among the next confirmed destinations for 2026, as the brand continues to pursue countries where Chinese EVs face no import penalties.
