BYD invites media to Oct 20 Seagull launch as retail falls to 9,517

BYD (HKG: 1211) invited media to an October 20, 2026, launch of the second-generation Seagull at Zhengzhou International Circuit, according to coverage that cites BYD's media invite. Blind pre-orders opened on October 9 with six exterior colors and no price. The date lands as Seagull China retail fell to 9,517 in September from 10,103 in August. Separate Chinese coverage said it learned the October 20 date from BYD, though BYD's own website had not yet posted the launch day as of mid-October.

Wholesale told a different story. Shipments reached 38,650 in September, of which 32,027 were exports, matching the company-reported monthly sales total. Domestic retail was down 5.8% month over month and about 62% from 25,252 a year earlier. August insurance registrations were 9,967, close to that month's retail count. In short, more than four-fifths of September wholesale left China, while home-market demand kept shrinking.

The new car is a clear size step. Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings put it at 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,570 mm tall on a 2,650 mm wheelbase, 425 mm longer and 150 mm longer in wheelbase than the current Seagull, with seating rising from four to five. That brings its overall bulk closer to BYD's Dolphin, which has long sat one rung above the Seagull in Ocean's hatch lineup. Cargo space adds a 94-liter frunk and up to 1,380 liters with the rear seats folded, plus a hidden under-seat box in the second row.

Exterior styling follows BYD's latest Ocean language, with a trident-style light signature, a more sculpted hood, air-channel details in the front bumper, a floating roof and half-hidden door handles. The rear switches to inverted trapezoid lamps with a BYD lettering badge between them. The redesign is meant to read as a larger hatchback rather than a micro EV stretch of the outgoing car, with a wheelbase 150 mm longer. Side glass and the rising beltline reinforce that longer silhouette in the official images released with the blind order.

Drive layout flips from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. A Zhengzhou-built TZ164XYB permanent-magnet motor rated at 95 kW replaces the 55 kW unit, and top speed rises from 130 km/h (81 mph) to 150 km/h (93 mph). The rear suspension moves from a torsion beam to a multi-link setup on 205/60 R16 tires. Blade lithium iron phosphate packs are rated at 320 km and 420 km (199 and 261 miles) on the CLTC cycle. Those ranges sit in the same neighborhood as today's Seagull, so the pitch is chassis and space rather than a big battery leap. Buyers who want more electric range will still look up the Ocean ladder.

Higher trims can use flash charging that takes the pack from 10% to 70% in five minutes on a dedicated pile; the feature is not standard across the range. Selected versions can add LiDAR and God's Eye B (DiPilot 300) for highway navigation assistance and automated parking. Every version gets a 140 km/h (87 mph) tire-blowout stability system. BYD already offered optional LiDAR on the 2026 Seagull launched in May, so the gen-2 option continues that path rather than inventing it.

The cabin drops a separate instrument cluster for a floating center screen with a 3:7 split, keeps physical climate keys and adds a magnetic shortcut dial. Front seats are power-adjusted with perforated trim and stitching, the driver gets massage, and rear passengers get their own vents. A 50 W wireless charging pad sits on the center console, and the light cream theme is meant to make the larger five-seat room feel less like a city microcar. Six colors are on the blind-order list: lime green, berry pink, mango orange, ice coconut blue, cream white and sesame gray.

BYD has not published an official MSRP for the second generation. The current Seagull's 2026 range runs from 69,900 CNY to 85,900 CNY (c. $10,390 to $12,770), with LiDAR packages lifting selected May-era trims higher. Blind orders take a 2,000 CNY (c. $300) refundable deposit in the BYD app and can be revised once configurations are unlocked.

The domestic rival that matters is Geely's Xingyuan. Its September retail reached 44,275, up from 39,651 in August, while Seagull's home-market retail stayed under 10,000. Xingyuan also shipped 60,871 units wholesale, including 19,856 exports. On retail alone, Xingyuan sold more than four Seagulls for every Seagull that found a Chinese buyer in September. The second-generation Seagull's extra length and fifth seat are aimed squarely at that fight.

Company-reported Seagull shipments totaled 265,901 in the first nine months of 2026, down about 33% year over year, even after September's wholesale rebound to 38,650 from 36,106 in August. Cumulative deliveries since the April 2023 launch reached about 1.55 million through September. The nameplate still matters inside Ocean, but the China retail slide shows why BYD is stretching the car toward Dolphin space instead of defending the old micro footprint. Export strength can pad the shipment line; it cannot replace local showroom traffic.

Whether a larger, rear-drive Seagull can claw retail share back from Xingyuan is the question October 20 will start to answer. Until BYD posts the MSRP and trim sheet, the media invite sets the calendar more firmly than the price war. For Ocean, the gen-2 car is less a cosmetic refresh than a bid to stay relevant in the segment Xingyuan now owns on retail.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.7253 CNY as of October 15, 2026.
