GAC Toyota, the 50/50 joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation (TYO: 7203) and Guangzhou Automobile Group (HKG: 2238), opened pre-sales for its bZ7 electric sedan on March 5, 2026, marking the company's most ambitious localisation effort to date in the world's largest automotive market.

Five variants span a retail price range of 169,800 CNY (c. $24,600) to 229,800 CNY (c. $33,300), with a limited-time subsidy programme reducing effective prices to as low as 159,800 CNY (c. $23,100). The range breaks down as follows: 600 Pro at 169,800 CNY, 600 Pro LiDAR Edition at 189,800 CNY (c. $27,500), 700 Max at 189,800 CNY, 700 Max LiDAR Edition at 209,800 CNY (c. $30,400), and the flagship 710 Ultra LiDAR Edition at 229,800 CNY (c. $33,300).

The bZ7 is the second model to emerge from Toyota's China engineering team, following the bZ3X SUV that launched in March 2025 — a vehicle that surpassed 10,000 monthly deliveries by November of that year. Pre-orders opened at the 2025 Guangzhou auto show on November 21, four months before pricing was confirmed.

The sedan is built on a new China-developed pure electric platform rather than Toyota's global e-TNGA architecture, reflecting the company's strategy of delegating greater development authority to local engineers. GAC Toyota deepened its collaboration with Huawei into a full-domain partnership in mid-2025, spanning the cockpit, powertrain, and digital connectivity.

The powertrain is supplied by Huawei's DriveONE division, delivering a peak output of 207 kW (278 hp) and a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). Two CALB lithium iron phosphate battery packs are offered: a 71.35 kWh unit rated at 600 km (373 miles) under the CLTC cycle on the 600-series trims, and an 88.13 kWh unit covering up to 710 km (441 miles) on the top-specification 710 Ultra.

The bZ7 measures 5,130 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width, and 1,506 mm in height, with a 3,020 mm wheelbase, producing a drag coefficient as low as 0.23 Cd. Seven exterior colours are available — including Ink Black, Mountain Grey, Cinnabar Red, Nebula Emerald, Cyber Gold, Pure Snow White, and Moon Silver — with a dual-tone body option on 700 Max and 700 Max LiDAR trims.

All five variants carry Huawei HarmonyOS Cockpit 5.0 as standard, paired with a 15.6-inch 2K central display, a frameless panoramic exterior mirror system, genuine wood trim inserts, a faux-leather panoramic roof, proximity-sensing flush electric door handles, Xiaomi smart-home ecosystem integration, and Huawei Xunwei connectivity.

The 710 Ultra LiDAR Edition adds a 27-inch full-colour head-up display, NAPPA leather upholstery, rear heated, ventilated, and massage seats, and a 21-inch wheel upgrade. Dual-chamber air suspension with SDC intelligent variable damping is standard on the 710 Ultra and available as a paid option on lower trims; a launch promotion offers this package free of charge on the 700 Max and 700 Max LiDAR Edition.

The advanced driver assistance system is provided by Momenta, whose R6 model runs on an Nvidia autonomous driving chip and processes data from 27 sensors — including a roof-mounted LiDAR, five millimetre-wave radars, 11 cameras, and ten ultrasonic radars.

All trims except the 600 Pro include the Momenta R6, with INP Navigation on Autopilot for both highway and urban scenarios, plus an ILPP intelligent memory parking system. LiDAR hardware is fitted to the three top variants: 600 Pro LiDAR, 700 Max LiDAR, and 710 Ultra. Toyota is a strategic shareholder of Momenta.

Purchase incentives at launch include trade-in allowances of up to 15,000 CNY on LiDAR variants and 7,000 CNY on standard trims, and a lifetime free traffic subscription for the first registered owner. A five-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty accompanies a separate five-year or 150,000 km battery warranty.

The joint venture’s monthly retail sales have faced significant pressure, totaling 41,809 units in February 2026, a sharp decline from the 63,648 units recorded in January. This follows a volatile 2025, where the company saw retail peaks of 71,604 units in October before tapering off toward the year's end.

Despite these broader headwinds, GAC Toyota managed a cumulative 2025 retail volume of over 770,000 units. The bZ7, alongside the bZ3X, represents a strategic push to reclaim mid-to-high-end market share as the company transitions from its traditional internal combustion engine dominance toward a competitive, localized NEV (New Energy Vehicle) lineup.

The bZ7's entry price of 169,800 CNY (c. $24,600) places it directly against the BYD (HKG: 1211) Han and Xiaomi (HKG: 1810) SU7. Whether a joint venture nameplate carries the same pull with younger Chinese buyers as a homegrown brand remains the central test Toyota's China teams will face in the months ahead.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.91 CNY as of March 29, 2026
