BYD Yuan UP claims Q3 sales crown with 190,139 units, nearly two-thirds exported

BYD (HKEX: 1211) says its Yuan UP compact electric SUV was the best-selling passenger car model of the third quarter of 2026, across all segments. Lu Tian, general manager of the BYD Dynasty Network sales division, said on October 22 that the model sold 190,139 units worldwide in the quarter, with more than 60,000 in each month. Nearly two-thirds of those cars were shipped abroad.
At home, the Yuan UP sold far fewer. Its China retail sales were 22,767 in September, down slightly from 22,958 in August, which left it fourth in the September retail ranking. Exports fell faster, to 36,662 from 44,670, and total wholesale volume slipped to 62,711 from 64,170.

Lu made the claim on social media, calling the Yuan UP "young people's first SUV" and saying BYD had aimed for a balance between value for money and what buyers actually need for city commuting and weekend trips. He did not say how the 190,139 units split between China and overseas markets.
BYD's quarterly figure is a wholesale count, covering cars shipped to dealers in China and vehicles exported. It equals the sum of the Yuan UP's monthly wholesale volumes of 63,258 in July, 64,170 in August and 62,711 in September, which put it first on the industry's model wholesale list in July and August and third in September.
On that measure, the claim holds against the two models closest to it. Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shipped 178,481 Model Ys from China in the quarter, 11,658 fewer than the Yuan UP, and Geely Automobile (HKEX: 0175) shipped 176,931 Galaxy Xingyuans, 13,208 fewer.
The crown depends on how the Song is counted. The same monthly lists show BYD's own Song entry at 61,012, 63,637 and 69,266, a quarterly total of 193,915, or 3,776 more than the Yuan UP. BYD sells several models under the Song name, including the Song L, Song Pro and Song Ultra, so the Yuan UP is the quarter's top seller only if those are treated as separate cars.

Either way, BYD dominated the list. Eight of the 23 models that topped 20,000 wholesale units in September were BYD products: the Song, the Yuan UP, the Seagull, the Dolphin, the Fangchengbao Tai 7, the Seal 06, the Sealion 06 and the Yuan PLUS.
The Yuan UP is sold outside China as the BYD Atto 2. Its exports were 43,860, 44,670 and 36,662 in July, August and September, a total of 125,192, or 65.8% of the quarter's wholesale volume. September's export share fell to 58.5%, from 69.6% in August.

The Yuan UP is 4,310 mm long, and exports took 65.8% of its third-quarter volume (BYD)
China retail sales over the same three months were 20,275, 22,958 and 22,767, or 66,000 in total, about 35% of the volume BYD counted. The model's September exports made up about a fifth of BYD's 175,877 new energy vehicle exports that month, when the company retailed 246,816 new energy vehicles in China.
Exports matter more to the whole industry too. Shipments abroad, including knock-down kits, made up 36% of Chinese passenger car makers' sales in September, up from 19% a year earlier.

Geely's Xingyuan runs the other way. Its China retail sales rose to 44,275 in September from 39,651 in August, and its quarterly retail total of 116,232 was about 1.76 times the Yuan UP's. Exports of 62,972 made up about 36% of its wholesale volume. Geely said the 1,000,000th Xingyuan left its Xiangtan plant on October 20, 2026, two years after launch.
Tesla's Model Y had the biggest September at home. Its China retail sales jumped to 50,359 from 29,260 in August, while exports fell to 12,589 from 26,437. Over the quarter it sold 104,777 at retail in China and exported 73,704.
The September retail ranking put the Model Y first and the Xingyuan second, followed by 27,544 sales of the Fangchengbao Tai 7, an SUV from BYD's own Fangchengbao brand. The Yuan UP's 22,767 was about half the Xingyuan's monthly total.

BYD launched the 2027 Yuan UP Feichi edition on September 17, so September's figures include only about two weeks of the updated car. It lists at 74,800 CNY to 104,800 CNY (c. $11,132 to $15,596), with limited-time prices of 69,800 CNY to 99,800 CNY (c. $10,388 to $14,852) after trade-in subsidies. Geely lists the Xingyuan at 64,800 CNY to 94,800 CNY (c. $9,644 to $14,108).

The Feichi edition, launched September 17, 2026, adds a two-spoke wheel and a column-mounted gear selector (BYD)
The update adds a 501 km (311 miles) CLTC range version with a 51.13 kWh Blade battery, alongside 301 km (187 miles) and 401 km (249 miles) versions. All use a single 70 kW, 180 Nm motor, and the body stays at 4,310 mm long on a 2,620 mm wheelbase. The Xingyuan offers 310 km, 410 km and 480 km (193, 255 and 298 miles) of CLTC range.

Inside, the Feichi edition gets a two-spoke steering wheel, a 12.8-inch central screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. BYD fits its God's Eye C driver-assistance system with highway navigation assistance and automated parking, and every version has a 360-degree camera system.
October will be the Feichi edition's first full month on sale. Whether the long-range version can lift the Yuan UP's China retail sales toward the Xingyuan's, or whether exports keep doing most of the work behind BYD's claimed sales crown, should show in the next round of monthly data.
Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.7195 CNY as of October 22, 2026.
