BYD Datang 3-rows SUV hits 100,000 pre-orders two weeks after launch

BYD (HKG: 1211) said on May 7, 2026, that its Datang flagship SUV had crossed 100,000 pre-orders — less than two weeks after pre-sales opened at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show on April 24.

Lu Tian, General Manager of BYD's Dynasty Network sales division, disclosed the figure in a Weibo post, saying the Datang "defines the flagship standard for full-size SUVs." Earlier data had the model collecting 30,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours of pre-sales; dealer-channel data later put the count above 60,000 within 48 hours.

The Datang enters one of China's most contested segments. More than 20 three-row SUVs launched at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, including the XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) GX, Zeekr 9X, and Leapmotor D19.

Incumbents including Li Auto's L9 and AITO's M9 also hold ground in the space. BYD positions the Datang as the Dynasty Network's first D-segment flagship, derived from the Dynasty-D concept.

The SUV measures 5,263 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,790 mm tall, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. BYD offers China's first 2+2+3 seven-seat layout, with dual zero-gravity seats in the front row. The cabin includes a 3-nanometer cockpit chip, a 27-speaker Devialet audio system, and a 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted display for second-row passengers.

Under the floor sits BYD's second-generation Blade Battery 2.0 paired with a full 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture. The rear-wheel-drive variant achieves up to 950 km (590 miles) of claimed CLTC range — a Chinese testing cycle that typically produces higher figures than WLTP or EPA ratings. Flash charging support enables a peak rate of 10C with a 1,000-ampere current and up to 1,000 kW of peak power.

Powertrain options span a single rear-mounted motor producing 300 kW (402 hp) and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant rated at 585 kW (785 hp). The AWD configuration accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. BYD equips the Datang with DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension with road preview, rear-wheel steering, and a crab-walk mode. Lidar-based driver assistance is also included.

Pre-sales pricing runs from 250,000 CNY (c. $36,800) to 320,000 CNY (c. $47,100). A DM-i plug-in hybrid version is also offered, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a 300 kW electric motor. BYD has not confirmed final retail pricing; deliveries from its Xi'an plant are scheduled for the first half of 2026.

The Datang launches at a difficult moment for BYD's core business. The company's April 2026 NEV sales reached 321,123 units, up 6.96% from March but down 15.51% year-on-year — extending an eight-month streak of year-on-year declines as China's EV price war continues to compress margins.

The existing Tang and Tang L models posted a combined 1,785 domestic sales in March 2026, down 75.7% year-on-year. The Datang represents BYD's bid to recover profitability in premium segments where margins remain intact.

Whether six-figure pre-orders will sustain past the reservation window — and how they convert into monthly volumes once deliveries begin — will be the real test of the flagship push.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.7986 CNY as of May 7, 2026
